Jerry's Flies originated in 1975, with only six of the standard
spinner fly patterns for trout fishing, such as the Black Gnat, Brown
Hackle, Black Wooly Worm, Royal Coachman, March Brown, and Muddler. From these
types of patterns, many other color combinations have been developed through
field testing, today, after 30 years, they are still among the best patterns.
The original patterns were
developed without a stinger
Size 14 treble hook, but it was soon discovered that many fish, when
striking short, were not being hooked. After adding this treble hook, the
problem was solved. We also discovered that if the treble hook was tied tight
up against the main hook, it would protrude straight back into the tail of the
fly and any strike which occurred at the tail of the fly would hook the fish.
Experimenting with different
size spinner blades is also an important factor. The blade is used as an
attractant. In off colored water, especially in the spring, a larger blade,
Size 2 or 3, produces more fish. One of the most important factors when using
the spinner flies is to retrieve the lures very slowly and work the lure close
to the bottom.
All of these factors have
been developed over the past several years through trials and from information
received from fishermen throughout the United States.
In the beginning, only a few
patterns were developed for fishing friends. After a couple years, local bait
shops began purchasing these patterns. Then, people from other states came to
West Virginia to
trout fish, purchased our spinner
flies for use in this state and took them back to their own states to use
in their local area. It wasn't long until bait shops in neighboring states
began requesting our lures. These requests have continued and virtually cover
the entire 48 states, with the foreign markets as well.
Now that the spinner
flies are so widely used, many fishermen still have questions regarding
their use. To help solve this problem, a condensed, simple version booklet
titled "TROUT FISHING TIPS AND TECHNIQUES" was written. This booklet teaches
the correct application of the techniques needed to work the spinner fly
correctly and attract the fish, thus enabling the fishermen to become more
interested and determined in the challenge of catching the "BIG ONE". We
believe that offering these techniques will involve more people into the sport
of fishing.
If you are looking for a
unique trout
catching lure, the JERRY'S SPINNER FLY is the one.
After developing a "sure
catching" trout
lure, Jerry's Flies in the last five years has been testing various types
of lures for musky, walleyes and panfish. Field testing is being performed on
these lures, as they were when developing the Spinner Flies. With the number
of variables that occur during the year, the lures must have to be changed to
fit the situation that occur.
This is why each day may
require a different lure, color or presentation to catch the fish. Continuous
testing is being performed to learn more about the habits of the fish and how
to catch them.
