Wooly Bugger Spinner Flies
are designed lures using a prime
food of fish, a fly, with a short striking
treble hook attached to the tail in conjunction with an attractor, a Colorado
Spinner Blade used to catch freshwater game fish trout..... crappie..... and
panfish. Larger blades are
used to better advantage in the early season to give more flash
to catch the fish's attention. Size #2 is the smaller, with #3 being larger.
Even a size #4 Indiana blade is perfect when added to the size 8 hook fly in
deep water or areas where there are large amounts of water.

Designed back in the 1960s, the
Wooly Bugger is now a fixture in the catalogs of every major fly tackle
distributor. The fly is basically an old-fashioned Wooly Worm with the
addition of a marabou feather for a tail.
A bugger resembles nothing in
nature when it's perched in a vise, but when it is soaking wet and on the
move, it truly comes alive. It can mimic a minnow, crayfish, leech or aquatic
insect.
In high or off-color water, I
lean toward the crayfish presentation. I pinch a small split shot on the
leader about one-half inch ahead of the fly. I cast across and slightly
upstream, let the fly sink for a second or two, and then initiate a darting,
hopping retrieve by simultaneously stripping line and raising and lowering my
rod tip.

Mid to late spring: As the natural hatches
begin to wind down, use flies with fluorescent color and include leech, wooly
bugger, flasher and patterns with red tails.
Early summer: With the start of warmer weather
the land insects and crustaceans begin to appear. Try an ant, wooly worm, and
bee spinner at this time and continue to use the fluorescent colored flies and
add red and yellow flies
Late summer: Water is warming up, fishing seems
to be very slow, and trout harder to find. The problem now is finding the
depths where the fish are comfortable rather than trying new fly patterns.
This is a good time to add a spinner attachment between the fly and the
leader. It causes more disturbance of the water because adding vibration helps
trout seek out your lure.
Fall: This is the time for large colorful
flashy flies with spinner attachments. muddlers, large wooly buggers work
really well right up to the time the lake freezes over.
