Trout Tips
1) In early spring, when fishing for
trout, try fishing the shallow water, especially in mid-afternoon, when the
water is at its warmest.
2) Slow retrieve is very important,
especially in early spring when the water is cold. The same holds true when
trolling.
3) To locate the depth of the feeding
trout, start counting every second once the lure hits the water. In the
spring, I
have found that most trout are found from 5 to 8 seconds before
starting retrieve. When water gets warmer in early
summer, then it will be required to increase the number of
seconds.
4) To help locate the fish, thoroughly
cover the area by casting in a fan pattern, then go in a clockwise or counter
clockwise direction until the total area is covered before
changing to a new location.
5) Important factor when fishing with an
artificial lure, is that each lure has an optimum speed to allow the lure to
preform properly. Not knowing the speed of the lure, could result
in no action of the lure and not catching the
fish.
6) When fishing a lure, besides its
speed, the proper depth is important. Fish change locations during the day or
season, so it is important to know where the fish are located. To
locate these fish, especially when trolling, a
depth finder is an important piece of equipment.
7) To help get you lure to the proper
depth, when trolling, especially in late spring, early summer, the use of
directional trolling sinker can be added to your line which
requires a reel with a line counter. Which allows
the lure to be placed to the level of the fish which is shown on
the depth finder.
8) Early spring colors of spinner flies
have been found to be olive green, black, brown, while mid spring colors
become brighter colors and summer colors are light colored flies.
9) Practice "Catch and Release" which
will allow us to enjoy fishing tomorrow, by gently releasing the fish, head
first and to make sure the fish has it strength to swim away. Do
not handle the fish with dry hands.
10) When trolling, after getting the
correct speed, a zig zag maneuver is effective because this allows the lure to
cover more area and helps to keep lines from crossing over each
other. make as large of a circle as possible to
keep lures free.
11) Wind direction can make a difference
in the speed of the lure when trolling. Adjust your motor speed based on
this direction, to keep the lure at the proper speed, for better
results. Fish many times feed against the bank
where the wind is blowing.
12) When fishing streamers, a short
darting or jerking method is used, which represents a small minnow swimming
through the water.
13) When fishing a spinner fly in a fast
water pool, cast the lure into a quiet area on the backside of the fast water
and allow the fast water to pull the lure into it. Use the
streams natural flow to work the lure for you. A small
weight may be required to be added to your line, about 10" to 12"
above the lure, to give easier casting and
proper depth.
14) Spoons during the late spring and
summer has become a lure of choice, which represent small bait fish. This
lure can be fished with a bare treble hook attached, while a fly
can be added giving it a different appearance
and action. Many different color of flies can be used with great
results.
